How Many Physiotherapy Sessions Will I Need?

8 min read  ·  Lambert Sports Clinic, Surbiton  ·  May 2026

One of the first questions patients ask us at Lambert Sports Clinic is: "How many sessions will I need?" It's an entirely reasonable question — you want to plan your time and budget. The honest answer is that it depends on several factors, and we'll give you our best estimate at your first appointment after a full assessment.

Factors That Affect How Many Sessions You'll Need

1. The Diagnosis

Different conditions respond at different rates. An acute muscle strain in a fit, young person may need only 3–4 sessions. A chronic tendinopathy that has been building for 12 months will typically require 8–12 sessions and ongoing home exercise commitment.

2. How Long You've Had the Problem

In general, the longer a problem has been present, the longer it takes to resolve. Acute (under 6 weeks) presentations tend to resolve faster than chronic (over 3 months) ones. This is one of the strongest reasons to seek treatment early.

3. Your Age and General Health

Tissue healing slows with age, and underlying health conditions (diabetes, inflammatory arthritis, cardiovascular disease) can affect recovery rates. Your physiotherapist will factor these in when setting expectations.

4. How Consistently You Do Your Exercises

This is perhaps the single biggest variable within your control. Research consistently shows that patients who adhere to their home exercise programme recover significantly faster — often halving their treatment time. Your exercises between sessions are not optional extras; they are the treatment.

5. Your Goals

Getting rid of pain at rest requires fewer sessions than returning to competitive sport. If you want to run a marathon, you will need more targeted rehabilitation than if your goal is to walk to the shops without pain.

Typical Session Numbers by Condition

These are approximate ranges for most patients. Your specific situation may differ:

  • Acute back or neck pain: 3–6 sessions
  • Chronic back pain: 8–12 sessions
  • Rotator cuff injury: 6–10 sessions
  • Knee pain (runner's knee, ITBS): 4–8 sessions
  • Achilles tendinopathy: 6–10 sessions (plus ongoing self-management)
  • Post-operative rehabilitation (ACL, hip, knee replacement): 12–20+ sessions
  • Plantar fasciitis: 4–8 sessions
  • Sciatica: 6–10 sessions

What Happens at Each Session?

Every session at Lambert Sports Clinic begins with a brief review of your progress since the last visit. We then progress your treatment based on how you've responded — this might involve advancing your exercise programme, adding new manual therapy techniques, or beginning sport-specific training. We do not repeat the same session indefinitely.

What If I'm Not Getting Better?

If you're not responding as expected, your physiotherapist will reassess and discuss alternatives — which might include imaging, onward referral to an orthopaedic specialist, or a different treatment approach. Transparent communication about progress is central to how we work.

Our commitment: At Lambert Sports Clinic, we do not book more sessions than you need. If you have recovered, we will tell you and provide a home programme for ongoing maintenance.
