This is one of the most common questions we're asked at Lambert Sports Clinic in Surbiton — and the honest answer is: it depends. Sometimes you need one, sometimes the other, and very often both at different stages of your recovery.
What Does Sports Massage Do?
Sports massage is a targeted, hands-on soft tissue therapy that:
- Releases muscle tension, tightness, and trigger points
- Improves circulation and speeds recovery after training
- Increases flexibility and range of motion in tight muscles
- Reduces delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) after hard exercise
- Provides maintenance care for active people to prevent injuries building up
It works on the muscular system primarily. It does not directly address problems with joints, nerves, tendons (in the traditional sense), or underlying structural issues.
What Does Physiotherapy Do?
Physiotherapy goes beyond muscles. A physiotherapist can:
- Diagnose the specific structure causing your pain (muscle, joint, disc, tendon, nerve)
- Treat joint stiffness and dysfunction with manual therapy and mobilisation
- Design a structured rehabilitation programme to address the root cause of your problem
- Prescribe and progress therapeutic exercises to restore strength and function
- Manage post-surgical rehabilitation
- Identify when imaging or specialist referral is needed
How to Decide
Use these scenarios as a guide:
Book Sports Massage if:
- You're a regular exerciser and want maintenance work to prevent problems
- You have general muscle tightness from training or desk work
- You want to recover faster between training sessions
- You're sore after a race, hard workout, or physical event
- You have a specific area of tension that has been building over weeks
Book Physiotherapy if:
- You have a specific injury — a new or acute pain, something that happened suddenly
- You have pain that isn't going away despite rest
- You have joint pain, not just muscle tightness
- You have pain radiating down your arm or leg
- You've had previous surgery and need rehabilitation
- You're not sure what is wrong — you need a diagnosis, not just treatment
You Might Need Both if:
- You have an injury that needs diagnosis and treatment (physio) plus tight muscles around it (massage)
- You are in rehabilitation and sports massage is helping you maintain range of motion between physio sessions
- Your physiotherapist has recommended massage as part of your treatment plan
