What Is Manual Lymphatic Drainage?

Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is a highly specialised massage technique developed in the 1930s by Danish therapists Emil and Estrid Vodder. Unlike conventional massage — which targets muscles and deep tissue — MLD works on the superficial lymphatic vessels just beneath the skin, using extremely light, rhythmic strokes to stimulate lymph flow.

The lymphatic system is the body's internal waste-removal network. It collects excess fluid, proteins, cellular debris and pathogens from tissues, filters them through lymph nodes and returns clean lymph to the bloodstream. When this system is sluggish or disrupted — through surgery, injury, inactivity or illness — fluid accumulates, causing swelling, heaviness and compromised immunity.

MLD directly addresses this by manually encouraging lymph towards functioning lymph nodes, effectively acting as an external pump for a compromised system. The technique uses such light pressure that it barely moves the skin — yet its physiological effects are profound and clinically measurable.

Not all lymphatic massage is MLD. True manual lymphatic drainage follows a precise anatomical sequence and uses very specific pressure. It requires dedicated specialist training — it cannot be replicated by a general massage therapist using lighter pressure. Our therapists are specifically qualified in MLD technique.

What MLD Is Clinically Used For

  • Post-surgical oedema — after liposuction, tummy tuck, BBL, breast surgery
  • Secondary lymphoedema — following cancer treatment or lymph node removal
  • Pregnancy oedema — safe, gentle swelling reduction
  • Fibromyalgia & chronic fatigue — symptom relief and immune modulation
  • Sinus congestion & rhinitis — facial MLD to drain sinuses
  • Sports injury recovery — faster resolution of bruising and swelling
  • Wellness & detox — immune support, energy, skin clarity, relaxation

How Manual Lymphatic Drainage Works

What to expect during and after a specialist MLD session at Lambert Sports Clinic.

1

Consultation

Your therapist reviews your medical history, surgical notes (if applicable) and your goals. Each session is planned around your individual anatomy and condition.

2

Proximal Clearance

The therapist begins at the lymph nodes — neck, axilla or groin — to clear the pathways before directing fluid from the peripheral areas. This sequencing is what makes MLD effective.

3

Rhythmic Strokes

Very light, rhythmic skin-stretch strokes follow the lymphatic map of the body. Each stroke lasts 1–2 seconds and is repeated 5–7 times before moving to the next region.

4

Post-Session Results

Most patients notice visible swelling reduction within 24 hours. You may need to urinate more frequently — this is normal and reflects successful lymph drainage. Skin may appear clearer and feel lighter.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage — FAQs

Manual lymphatic drainage is a specialist massage technique that uses very light, rhythmic strokes to stimulate the lymphatic vessels just beneath the skin, encouraging lymph fluid to move towards the lymph nodes where it is filtered and removed. It was developed in the 1930s by Emil and Estrid Vodder and is now widely used in clinical and wellness settings.

Regular massage targets muscles using moderate to firm pressure. MLD uses extremely light pressure — the weight of a 5p coin — focused entirely on the lymphatic vessels just under the skin. The strokes follow precise anatomical pathways. It cannot be replicated by a general therapist simply applying lighter pressure; it requires specific MLD certification and training.

No — MLD is one of the gentlest therapies available. Most patients find it deeply relaxing and often fall asleep during sessions. Even post-surgical patients with tender tissue find MLD comfortable. The technique is specifically designed to be soothing and non-invasive.

For wellness, one session every 4–6 weeks maintains good lymphatic flow. For post-surgical recovery, 5–10 sessions over 4–8 weeks is standard. For lymphoedema management, a more intensive course is typically followed by regular maintenance. Our therapists will assess you and recommend a personalised schedule.

Yes — our therapist Viviane is a native Brazilian Portuguese speaker who delivers MLD sessions fully in Portuguese. Lily, our other therapist, speaks Spanish and welcomes Hispanic and Latin American patients. Both are happy to consult, advise and treat in your language.
🇧🇷 Em Português — Drenagem Linfática Manual em Surbiton

O Que É a Drenagem Linfática Manual?
